Where to Find a TikTok Username or Link

· 8 min read

TikTok gives every account two names: a display name you see in bold and an @username that works in addresses. The username is the one that matters when you want to look someone up. It is also the part most likely to be missing when all you have is a screenshot.

Finding it is usually a matter of knowing which part of the screen to read. Copying a link is a separate skill, because the share sheet can give you a long address, a short one, or a link wrapped in tracking parameters that have nothing to do with the account.

Paste a username or a link to look up a public account.

Where do I find a TikTok username?

On a profile, the username sits under the display name, usually with an @ in front of it. The same name appears in the profile address: tiktok.com/@username. If you can open the profile, you can read the username without opening a menu or copying anything.

On a video, the author’s username is shown next to the caption or in the author line. Tapping it opens the profile, which is often the fastest way to get from a video to the account. The caption may also mention other accounts with @handles; those are different people, not the person who posted the video.

In a message, the link itself usually contains the username. A full TikTok address has the @handle in plain sight, right after tiktok.com/. That is the part to copy if you want to look up the account rather than the one post someone sent you.

The display name is not a substitute. Two accounts can share a display name, and a person can change theirs without changing the username. The @handle is the unique part. If you write down only the display name, you may end up looking at the wrong account or finding nothing at all.

How do I copy a TikTok link?

In the app, open the video or profile, tap the share button, and choose the option that copies the link. The label varies by platform and app version, but the result is the same: a TikTok address on your clipboard. On the web, copy the address from the browser bar instead.

Copy from the address bar when you can. It gives you the long form, with the username visible, and it avoids the extra wrapping that messaging apps sometimes add. A long link is easier to read, easier to check, and easier to repair if one part of it stops working.

A copied link is not the content itself. It is a pointer to an account and, usually, one post. That is why a link can open a profile page long after the post it named has been deleted, and why a link to a deleted post can still look perfectly well formed.

If the share sheet offers several formats, prefer the one that starts with tiktok.com and contains an @. The short vm.tiktok.com form is convenient in a message, but it hides the account name, which makes it harder to check before you open it.

What does a TikTok link contain?

A full TikTok link carries two useful pieces: the username after the @, and a post number after the username. The username tells the site whose account to read. The post number tells it which item on that account you meant. A profile link may carry only the username.

That split explains why the username is the durable half. A post can be deleted, made private, or simply age out of the public side, while the account remains. If you keep the username, you can still find the person. If you keep only a post link, a dead post can leave you with nothing.

Query parameters after the post number — the “?is_from_webapp=1” and similar suffixes — do not change the account. They are tracking or routing details. You can usually drop them without changing which profile or post the link points at.

The exact shape of the address can vary between the app, the web, and a shared link. If you are unsure which half is which, how to open a TikTok link walks through the anatomy and the two ways to open the same address.

How do I find a username from a video or a screenshot?

From a video, tap the author’s @handle. That opens the profile, and the profile address gives you the username in a form you can copy. If tapping is not an option, read the handle from the author line or the caption and type it into a search box or a viewer site.

From a screenshot, you can use the username only if it is visible. Look under the display name, in the caption, or in the corner where TikTok prints the handle. If the screenshot crops it out, there is no reliable way to reconstruct it from the image alone. Ask the person who sent it.

A display name in a screenshot is not enough to identify an account. It may be shared by several people, and it may have changed since the screenshot was taken. The @handle is the part that resolves to one profile. Without it, guessing is more likely to land on the wrong person than on the right one.

If the screenshot is of a story rather than a video, the account may still be findable, but the story itself may not be. How to watch a TikTok story without an account explains the 24-hour window and what happens after it closes.

What if the link is a short one?

Short links look like vm.tiktok.com followed by a short code. They carry no readable username; their job is to redirect. Until the redirect fires, neither you nor a viewer site can tell which account or post is on the other side. That makes them convenient to send and awkward to inspect.

They are also the form most likely to stop working. A redirect can expire or be reissued separately from the post it once named, so a short link can die while the account is still active. If the redirect no longer resolves, the username is not recoverable from the short code.

The practical fix is to ask the sender for the full link or the username. A full address leaves you something to work with even after the post is gone. A short link leaves you with characters that no longer point anywhere. How to open a TikTok link covers the short-link case in more detail.

Where do I paste it next?

Once you have the username, paste it into the search box on this page. You do not need to create an account or install anything. The site reads the public data behind that name and builds a profile page you can browse. How to view a TikTok profile without logging in covers what that page includes.

If you have a video link instead of a username, you can paste the whole address; the username is taken from it and the post number is used as a hint about which item to open. If the link is short and cannot be followed, the site says so rather than guessing at the destination.

You can also paste the username into the TikTok app or website, but that path may ask you to sign in, especially on a phone. A viewer site is a way to read the public side without creating that account. How TikTok viewer sites work explains what those sites can and cannot reach.

What you cannot get from a link alone

A link does not tell you whether the account is public, active, or still using the name you have. It points at an address; the answer depends on what is on the public side when you ask. A username that resolved last month can stop resolving after a rename or deletion.

A link also cannot open a private account. The public data does not include the private side, so there is nothing for a viewer site to read. That is not a limitation of one site; it is a property of the data. No link format changes it.

And a link does not include the content itself. It is a pointer, not a copy. If the post was deleted or the story expired, the address can remain well formed while the thing it named is gone. That is why keeping the username is more useful than keeping only the URL.

Still worth a look?

Paste a username or a TikTok link — public stories, profiles and videos, no account and no app.
